There's Just Something About This Mary
Dr. Mary Majors, principal of Anderson Creek Academy, has had a storied career in education leadership impacting thousands of children and families. Over the last four years she has transformed an underperforming charter school, then in its second year, to today being the highest performing public school in Harnett County.
Anderson Creek Academy (ACA) opened in 2014 and was designed to be a part of a housing community designed by partners David Levinson and Steven Shotz. Their vision aimed to bring homeowners a one-of-a-kind experience that promotes the core values of health, education, sustainability, fellowship and camaraderie called Anderson Creek Community. Levinson and Shotz, knowing that education is a critical element to community success desired to create a school with a family atmosphere where students’ academic success comes first.
The ACA board hired Dr. Mary Majors, a veteran principal from the schools in the Department of Defense District to take to the next level. Privileged to be a part of the transition, I have watched Dr. Majors take their vision and give it a strong heartbeat. Through an extended school day for most students and education planning focused on a STEAM+ plan with heavy intervention to ensure students master the curriculum taught, ACA was the highest performing public school in the county in 2018. Achieving a B on their NCReport Card for the third year in a row, Dr. Majors and their team have just scratched the surface of what is possible. Their heavy focus on character education and technology has them poised for the long haul.
I met Mary in 2015. She is one of the hardest working, dedicated and “people first” focused leaders I have ever met. I consider her a not just a mentor in school leadership, but how to live your life filled with passion and belief in other people.

The School Leader Consortium is an opportunity for dozens of leaders of all levels and all types of schools come together to network, learn best practices and strategies from some of the highest performing and most productive leadership teams across North Carolina. Over the last three years our consortium members have utilized the information they learn during these inspiring sessions to grow their schools, improve academics, learn new strategies and gain new partners to ensure their school exceeds the expectations of their families.
